As long as you have an opportunity to clean up (scrape the bugs off your face) before meeting with people I think it's great! Ride whenever you can. I think your "friend" is just jealous of your freedom.
I had a friend who rode his bike on his sales route. He had a little trailer for his samples, order books, etc. Sadly, a truck failed to look for oncoming traffic and made a left turn over him a number of years ago. For any of you who believe in such things, I'd appreciate it if you would say a little prayer for the memory of Donald Thompson. A good man. A good husband. A good father.
And be careful out there.
